With beautiful white sandy beaches, corals, a range of flora and fauna and fabulous weather year-round, Fiji should be on everyone’s bucket list. For us Aussies, it is only a 3.5-hour flight. Which if you live in Australia,
Where are the Yasawa Islands?
Northwest from Nadi is a group of fifteen volcanic masses. There you will find the Yasawa Islands. While they are less commercialized than the mainland, this group of Islands, make up one of the most popular areas in the region. There are approximately 30 resorts to choose from! With reasonable prices, it is no wonder the Yasawa Islands are a popular backpacking route!
Getting to the Yasawa Islands is relatively easy using the transfer company Awesome Adventures. While some resorts will offer you private transfers, those that don’t will recommend the Yasawa Flyer transfer cruise.
The Yasawa Flyer with Awesome Adventures
By far the best way to experience the Yawasa Islands is on the cruise Yasawa Flyer with Awesome Adventures. The cruise departs Port Denarau daily at 8.45 am. Port Denarau is about a 30-minute drive from Nadi International Airport. Also, there is a decent group of shops there if you wish to stock up on groceries and/or have a meal!
The boat itself is a large high-speed, modern catamaran with air-conditioned areas, licensed bar,
Yasawa Flyer Schedule
Below is an image from Awesome Adventures with the daily schedule for the Yasawa Flyer.
Yasawa Flyer Prices
The prices per person vary depending on which island you wish to go to. For example, our first stop was Barefoot Manta which cost us AUD $117 for a one-way pass. Our Captains Lounge pass was an additional AUD $24 which we believe was worth it as the journey was 3 hours. We were able to enjoy juices, soft drinks
However, if you plan to island-hop you can look t purchasing the Bula Pass. This allows you to visit numerous islands. Once you activate the pass on the first day, you have a number of days to island-hop. A Bula 5 day pass is AUD $285 and a 7-day pass is AUD $362. There are pass options available up until 15 days! You can also purchase a Bula Combo Pass, which includes transfers and accommodation at some of the resorts. Don’t forget that whichever option you choose, reservations are recommended beforehand!
Which Islands Did We Visit?
We were in Fiji for approximately 2.5 weeks. However, only 4 nights were spent in the Yasawa Islands. However, if we were to go again, we would definitely choose to stay there longer. We stayed at two island resorts, Barefoot Manta and Barefoot Kuata.
Barefoot Kuata
Situated at the entrance to the Yasawa Islands
Barefoot Manta
Located slightly further away than Barefoot Kuata, Barefoot Manta is 3 hours from Port Denarau. There is definitely a similar vibe between the two properties with options for dormitories or tents available. Also, the house reef at Barefoot Manta is one of the most spectacular in Fiji! And it was so fascinating to listen to the Marine Biologists who are even planting corals there for regrowth.
