Have you been to Tokyo a few times and planning another trip there?
No doubt you already have your favourite areas, restaurants and hotels but let us tell you about a few places and activities that you may not have heard of or been to before.
Below we will look at Hachijo Island and a few places in Tokyo that will help you plan your next trip to the dynamic City.
Hachijo Island
We hadn’t heard of this beautiful island before, located 286km south of Tokyo. However, if you are looking for a unique and off-the-beaten-track experience then you may want to plan a weekend trip here.
To get there you will need to travel by air but the plane ride is only 55 minutes.
This small volcanic island is completely removed from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo but there are so many activities to enjoy.
Below is a list of what we got up to during our time on Hachijo Island.
1. Snorkel With Turtles
Snorkelling with Turtles? Sign us up!
Who knew that this island was home to a large population of sea turtles? While it can’t be guaranteed, it is highly likely you will be able to spot them too.
It’s best to book a tour as your guide will know more about the weather conditions, water visibility and the turtles’ behavioural patterns.
If you are visiting in summer, you will also want to check out the beaches to get a tan. There is a black sand beach called Ohama Beach and a white sand beach called Sokodo Beach. Both are calling your name.
Where we swam with turtles: 642 Okago, Hachijo, Tokyo 100-1401, Japan
2. Trek to Mt. Hachijo
It’s no trip to Hachijo Island without a hike up Mt.Hachijo-Fuji. While a return hike will take you three hours return, it is well worth it for the views.
While the majority of the walk is steps and easy sloped paths, the challenge comes if you want to reach the peak. There are a few skinny paths involved – not for the faint-hearted.
If you are scared of heights and don’t think you will make it to the top, don’t worry as you will have amazing views the whole hike even if you only make it halfway.

You can’t come to Tokyo without visiting a traditional Japanese restaurant. We are sure you have visited a few if you have been to the City before but this one specialises in tempura.
We had you at tempura right?
This restaurant serves tempura in a unique way. Rather than being served on a plate, each piece of tempura is served individually on a piece of paper. This way it allows any excess oils to absorb.
