If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, the blissful island of Sri Lanka is the perfect place to set your sights. With endless stretches of white-sand beaches beautiful enough to rival those of the Maldives, Sri Lanka makes an idyllic and affordable honeymoon destination. If adventure is your cup of tea, you can spend hours trekking through dense jungle and discovering ancient ruins and fascinating historical sites.
Despite being a relatively small island, there are plenty of incredible sights to see and places to explore here. But to help you narrow down your choices, we’ve rounded up three of the best spots for couples to visit in the spiritual heartland that is Sri Lanka.
Pasikudah Bay
The stunning Pasikudah Bay is surrounded by a coral reef, which breaks the waves and creates up to 50 metres of calm, shallow, crystal-clear waters in the bay. This makes it perfect for bathing and snorkelling until the golden sands lure you back to relax under a swaying palm. Further up, this area is also popular for watersports and sailing, and couples can even enjoy a romantic sunset yacht ride across the Indian Ocean.
Of course, there are numerous other beaches that will take your breath away in Sri Lanka. For the epitome of luxury, why not try a couples resort? Some even offer their own exclusive bays with spa treatments and dolphin and whale watching opportunities as well.
Aberdeen Waterfall
Nothing is more invigorating than trekking through lush jungles to discover a magnificent cascade of water, and with over 400 waterfalls in Sri Lanka, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Some of the best include Aberdeen Waterfall, where the waters of the Kelani River fall almost 100 metres into a cool, welcoming pool.
This is one of the best waterfalls to bathe in, and the surrounding scenery is incredible. As it’s one of the lesser known falls, you’ll avoid the crowds and likely be able to enjoy the serenity of the valley alone.
Udawalawe National Park
Sri Lanka is one of the few places in the world where you can see hundreds of wild elephants roaming free. They are protected by law and much of their habitats are now national parks, so that their populations can continue to thrive. Although elephants are respected culturally and religiously in this country, they can also be treated unfairly. Always ensure that any place you visit elephants are ethically keeping and protecting the animals, such as in a national park.
Alongside the elephants, you can expect to see water buffalo, monkeys, crocodiles and many interesting reptiles and birdlife on your safari. Udawalawe National Park is one of those places you’ll never forget, and visiting as a couple is sure to create some incredible lifelong memories.
Trip of a lifetime
No matter where you visit in Sri Lanka, you’re sure to have a great time. With such a rich cultural heritage, the spiritual and peaceful nature of the island resonates through the cities, jungles, and shores. From days spent worshipping the sun on powder-soft sands to adventures through the undergrowth of the rainforest, there are some truly amazing spots for couples to visit in Sri Lanka.
