While many activities in Slovenia are outdoor based, we came across the Postojna Cave Tour while researching things to do in Slovenia. The statistics of the caves (which you will read below) blew us away and soon enough Postojna became a stop on our road trip around Slovenia!
Postojna Cave Tour
The Postojna Cave system is absolutely breathtaking! With 24km of caverns, tunnels and passages there is a lot to see. Firstly you get to experience 3.7km of the caves on an electric train which takes you through tight tunnels, large halls (one with a beautiful Murano-glass chandelier) and more! Then you get to explore a subterranean paradise created by tiny droplets of rain water over millions of years by foot for 1.5km!
Location and Parking
The town of Postojna is located in southwest Slovenia. It is only 35 kilometres from the Italian border. Below you can see a map of the Postojna Cave Park, which has its own parking lot for 5€ ($7.90AUD) for the day. We chose to stay at Hotel Jama which meant parking was free as it is located at the entrance to the Cave ticketing booth.
Facts about the tour
The total tour duration is 90 minutes. Their are audio guides available (we won’t spoil it by telling you too many facts about these amazing caves!) and it is also wheelchair accessible.
The beginning of the tour will take you on an incredible train ride through the caves. It is a great introduction to the area and allows you to witness how large the underground cave system is! As you walk around you will move from the Limestone Chamber to the Spaghetti Chamber and the Red Chamber. Each Chamber was discovered at a different time in history. Some of the locations (such as the Russian Bridge in the Limestone Chamber) come with a great story which will be sure to leave you in laughter!
Temperature
It is a cool 9.5°C so make sure to address appropriately. However, if you need further layers (like we did) you can hire a rather stylish cloak for 4€ ($6.30AUD) before you enter!
Opening Hours (Tour Times)
Tickets and Prices
To just enter the Postojna cave it is 27,90€, to enter the Predjama Castle and Cave it is 38,50 €. You can buy these tickets online which is recommended during high season (May to September) or purchase when you get to the ticket office.
Postojna cave from Ljubljana
We would recommend hiring a car as the Predjama Castle is 9km away from the Caves and there are many other places to see in the area as well such as the Rakov Skocjan.
However if you want to go by public transport go from Ljubljana Avotbusna Postaja (Ljubljana Bus Station) to Postojnska Jama (Postojna Cave Park) and then there is a free shuttle bus that runs between the cave and castle.
