While I haven’t googled it, I would assume the Maldives would be rated the number one bucket list destination in the world. Let me check now so I am not misleading you…
There you go. In October 2023, Forbes noted that the Maldives topped the global list of the most coveted travel experiences globally.
So with that in mind, why wouldn’t you want to plan your honeymoon in the Maldives? With the dazzling blue ocean, overwater bungalows and luxury 5-star accommodation, it is the perfect place to spend some romantic time with your loved one.
However, if you have a partner who prefers taking holidays in a dynamic city with endless activities, convincing them to book a trip to the Maldives may be a challenge. Below we have come up with the perfect solution for you.
Why not spend a few nights in the exciting city of Singapore before taking the easy flight to the Maldives? It sounds like a win-win.
Below let’s look at how to travel between the two destinations as well as some recommendations for what to see and do in Singapore and some suggestions for the ultimate honeymoon accommodation in the Maldives.
Singapore to the Maldives with Singapore Airlines
If you have read any of our travel guides before, you will have started to notice a recurring theme – we choose to fly Singapore Airlines whenever it is possible.
Not only are they rated by SKYTRAX as the number 1 airline in the world, but having flown with them time and time again, we can say with confidence that the onboard comfort and service are unmatched.
If you are taking on our advice to spend a few nights in Singapore followed by some downtime in the Maldives, your best option is to book a multi-city flight through the Singapore Airlines website. This way you will be able to fly in a variety of aircraft from the A380 to the A350-900.
Today though, we are going to specifically speak about the daily flights with Singapore Airlines from Singapore Changi International Airport to Velana International Airport in Male.
While it is only a five-hour flight, passengers still have the option to choose between Economy or Business Class which of course provides that extra level of comfort.
Recently, we took the 20:40 departure from Singapore to Male which had us arriving at the airport at 22:10. While it was only a short flight, we had access to over 1,800 entertainment options with our 11.1-inch TV screens in Economy class.
The lovely staff on board ensured that meals were served shortly after take off in case other passengers wished to get some sleep before arriving. Both of us chose the same meal – a succulent spicy chicken curry with jasmine rice and grilled vegetables. On the side was a smoked salmon salad and an ice cream for dessert.
Hot tip – next time you are flying with Singapore Airlines in Economy class, take note of the 4-way adjustable sculpted headrest which you can adjust to provide maximum comfort, whether watching a movie or trying to get some shut-eye.
Things to do in Singapore
We have previously posted a thorough guide on Singapore which includes all of our favourite things to do there. You can check that out here.
As an overview however, let’s see what you can get up to:
Spend the Afternoon and Evening at Gardens by the Bay
Immerse yourself in the enchanting Gardens by the Bay, a lush oasis in the heart of Singapore.
Spend your afternoon strolling through the iconic Supertree Grove, where towering, futuristic structures come to life with a dazzling light display in the evening.
Afterwards, head to the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest to witness the magical transformation of these climate-controlled conservatories.
Hot tip – hang around for the ‘Garden Rhapsody’ light and sound show which takes place daily at 7.45pm and 8.45pm. It’s one of our favourite things to see in Singapore.
Get lost in the Future World exhibition at The Art Science Museum
Be sure to put aside a couple of hours to explore the captivating Future World exhibition at The ArtScience Museum.
This interactive and dynamic showcase blends art and technology, inviting visitors to explore futuristic landscapes and engage with digital installations.
From vibrant digital waterfalls to interactive light displays, the exhibition sparks creativity and curiosity.
It’s a perfect blend of art and science that appeals to all ages, offering a unique and thought-provoking experience that lingers long after you leave.
Head for Rooftop Cocktails at Marina Bay Sands (Ce La Vi) or Level 33
Elevate your Singapore experience by sipping on cocktails (or beers) at one of the rooftop bars.
Whether it’s the sophisticated atmosphere of Ce La Vi located at Marina Bay Sands or the panoramic views from Level 33, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the city skyline.
While you will need to pay an entry fee to visit Ce La Vi, the money spent acts as a credit which you can put towards your food or drink. For those who are not staying at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, it’s a fun way to visit this iconic building in Singapore.
In comparison, Level 33 is free to enter but it is recommended that you make a booking in advance.
Fun fact – this happens to be the world’s tallest indoor microbrewery. If you enjoy beer, you will have to try their paddle which comes with 5 beers.
Dine at a Hawker Centre
Take in Singapore’s culinary scene by dining at a local hawker centre.
These bustling food havens offer a diverse array of affordable and delicious dishes that showcase the city’s multicultural heritage.
From savoury Hainanese chicken rice to flavorful laksa, hawker centres provide an authentic taste of Singaporean cuisine.
Our favourite two centres are Maxwell Food Centre and Lau Pa Sat.
Explore Changi Airport
So you may be wondering why this is on the list of our favourite things to do in Singapore?
Sure, we love travel but we don’t typically enjoy all of the airports that we visit. Changi Airport however is incredibly different to any other airport in the world.
Start your exploration at The Jewel, an architectural marvel featuring the stunning HSBC Rain Vortex, the world’s tallest indoor waterfall.
Indulge in retail therapy at high-end boutiques, dine at a myriad of restaurants, or simply unwind in the lush gardens and leisure areas including the Butterfly Garden.
You can even visit the 24-hour cinema.
Expert tip – it’s possible to check your suitcases in 24 hours before your flight. Normally, we arrive at the airport 6-7 hours before our flight. This way, we can drop our bags and enjoy the airport before departing.
Your Honeymoon in the Maldives
Now that you have had a couple of days exploring the bustling and dynamic city of Singapore, it is time to put your bathing suit on and relax in the sun.
If you haven’t been to the Maldives before, below are a few key tips:
- All international flights arrive at Velana International Airport. Depending on where your resort/guest house is located, you may be required to stay overnight in Male before transferring by boat or seaplane the following morning. We choose to stay in Hulhumale instead of Male City.
- Most resorts and guest houses accept credit cards. Getting some small cash out from the ATMs in the airport for tipping is always a good idea.
- If you wish to stay at two different resorts (which can be a good idea), you can not just expect to travel from one to the other by boat or seaplane. You will likely need to detour via Male.
- Take note of the additional costs when booking resorts/guest houses. A 12% GST charge is added to all goods and services, including hotel stays, food, and drinks. You may also find a 5 – 10% service charge added on top of the GST charges. There is also a Green Tax ($6 per person per night) which is payable at the resort.
