In April this year we spent 10 days travelling through the ‘Garden Route’ from Durban to Cape Town with South Africa Tourism ANZ and G Adventures. One of our favourite experiences was our Inkwenkwezi Safari where we sighted White Rhinos, White Lions, Zebras, Antelopes and many other species. Not only does the Private Game Reserve offer Guided Safaris, but they also offer Quad Bike Safaris, Elephant Experiences and Hiking Safaris.
We were travelling with a fantastic group of 10 people, however it is not essential to be travelling in a group to participate in the activities listed.
About Inkwenkwezi National Park
Inkwenkwezi National Park is a Private Game Reserve featuring the Big 5. Featuring over 4,000 hectares, the Park has two rivers and a variation in textured, lush vegetation. A variety of animal life and bird life thrive in Inkwenkwezi National Park.
Location
Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve is situated in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, in a malaria free zone. East London National Airport is a 40 minute drive from the Reserve on dirt roads. Alternatively, Durban Airport is a 8 – 9 hour drive from Inkwenkwezi National Park.
Inkwenkwezi is the perfect location for travellers who are based closer to Cape Town and do not wish to head north in South Africa to areas like Kruger National Park.
Our Inkwenkwezi Safari Experience
We were fortunate enough to experience Safari twice during our two night stay in the area. What we love about Safari is that no two days will ever be the same – excitement levels are constantly high as you never know what animals you will spot!
Inkwenkwezi Safari is a Guided Tour in a 4×4 vehicle. The game drives can be enjoyed in either the morning, afternoon or at sunset (we did the sunset safari both times). The vehicle is an open vehicle with 11 seats in total but don’t worry, wherever you are sitting feels safe!
On our first game drive the initial animal we spotted were two White Rhinos. This in itself was an exceptional experience seeing neither of us had seen Rhinos before (we spotted the rest of the Big 5 in Tanzania, but never the Rhino).
On both days we were lucky enough to see Lions and White Lions. What we loved about the Guides on our Inwenkwezi Safari is that if we were enjoying a certain area, the guide would allow us to wait around. We probably spent 1.5 hours with the Lions on the second day. It was amazing to watch them interact, feed on a fresh kill and even mate!
If you choose, like us to do a Sunset Safari the driver will stop at a picturesque location to watch the sun set. Enjoy a fresh drink while discussing with the group the sightings of the afternoon!
Below are some of our favourite photos from both of the guided safari’s.
How about a Quad Safari? Would you try it out?
When we were told that we had the option to Quad Bike we never expected that it would be amongst the animals. But it was!
The quad bike tour was approximately 2 hours and took us through the Private Game Reserve. It was such a unique experience. While we were constantly looking out for animals, the other fun part was driving the quad bikes through piles of muddy water (and being splashed). We felt like big kids again!
