Zelenci Nature Reserve is a wetland area in the Valley that stretches between Podkoren and is surrounded by several peaks of the Julian Alps. A visit to this area will easily make you see why it has been protected as a Nature Reserve since 1992.

About Zelenci Nature Reserve
The area is approximately 15 hectares in total. Below is a list of what you can expect on a visit:
- Incredibly beautiful crystal clear greenish – blue lakes
- Unique Flora and Fauna including the whiskered bat, sand lizard and the scarlet grosbeak
- Dry Wetland
- Fast-moving streams reaching the area from southern mountain slopes
- Surrounding view of the Julian Alps.
Our favourite part about visiting this Reserve was the emerald greenish-blue lake situated at the far western part of the swamp. The lake does not freeze in winter with a constant temperature throughout the year of 6°C. When visiting, there is a path that borders the lake so that you do not harm the nature. There is a observation tower which provides beautiful views over the Lake and across the the Julian Alps.
If you look carefully into the lake you will notice tiny bubbling ‘volcanoes’. These are a unique natural phenomenon in Slovenia.
It is possible to walk around the Reserve in about 30 minutes.
Location
You will find Zelenci Nature Reserve about 4.5 kilometres from the centre of Kranjska Gora. It is located on the northern edge of the Triglav National Park.
If driving, you will not miss the location as there are spaces for parking available on the main road. Alternatively, if you are walking it will take approximately 45 minutes. There are many beautiful things to visit along the way.

When to Visit
We visited Zelenci Nature Reserve during Summer. In Summer you will be able to witness the beautiful colours of the nature. The emerald-green water sparkles next to the dense forest. The area is covered by snow in Winter. However, there is nothing more incredible than the Julian Alps covered in snow.

If you are planning a trip to Kranjska Gora be sure to also check out Lake Jasna. It is possible to swim at Lake Jasna (during summer anyway) so it is a great place to spend the afternoon on a warm summers day.
